Ode to Zhang Shunsheng,
Pingxiahe’s Former Village Head
Mt Doulou recalls your weak build in youth,
Eyes sharp in war,
Longing for dawn’s truth.
A martyr’s descendant,
Reared by new China’s grace,
You vowed within that earthen wall
To take your place.
Your words undid each furrowed brow with grace,
The troupe you led brought smiles to every face.
By shady trees and kitchen hearths,
Hearts laid bare.
The teacher’s rostrum found your steadfast care.
Your blueprints woke the sleeping land
From its despair.
The people’s weal and woe lay in your sight,
With picks and chants,
You roused the village might—
Together they carved the mountain height,
Till hills shone bright
With fruitful toil and light.
You bridged the streams
And paved each rocky way.
Dams turned the sky to mirrored blue each day.
Canals coiled round the foothills’ gentle sweep—
Downstream, even neighboring villages
Your kindness reap.
When sweet-potato slices were before a feast enough,
Before long fruits and melon fragrance
Started to drift on every bluff.
The Yimeng spirit found new life in their hands,
New trades sprang up across the village lands.
Joyful songs echoed on the hilltops wide—
Pingxia’s folks at last crossed poverty’s divide.
Time flows like wind, yet nothing can erase
Your love for the folks, your fervent grace.
Your tireless steps are etched on slopes so steep.
Huala Crags’ waters as they flow and leap
Still chant your grace, your deeds so deep,
Wishing you--
Like the green pine, eternal keep!
